About Jane

Jane Reväe McWhirter (she/her) is a visual artist from Saskatoon, SK, Treaty 6 Territory. Jane received her BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, majoring in painting and ceramics but exploring everything from embroidery to sound-based installation.

  Jane uses art as an outlet, exploring various mediums while channelling emotion into her work. Her work explores themes of healing, vulnerability, connection, growth, mental health, feminine energy, and flora and fauna. Her soft, spooky style can be found in paintings, pottery, prints, stickers, stationery, and more.

As a child, I sold drawings of flowers door-to-door; creating creepy art helped me through tough teenage years and being creative played a pivotal role in disrupting the self-destructive path I was on in my early 20s. 

For the past 16 years, my practice has been centred around active self-care and healing through art-making. When I am not doing well, I create artwork to soothe myself. This work is a refuge - a place for me to release energy and calm my mind. When I am doing better mentally, I create expressive, personal, and cathartic pieces. This work is significant and helps me understand myself. I’ve always felt like they were separate processes and that one was more valuable than the other, but I know they cannot exist separately. When I am unwell, art takes care of me; when I am thriving, art challenges me and helps me grow. I am so grateful for this balance.

  • Western Development Museum, 2022 - Current, Exhibit Design Technician
    Exhibit design for all four Western Development Museums in Saskatchewan. Creating exhibit signage, graphic design and visual communication materials for exhibit development, refurbishment and production. Maintain and operate a large-format printer and related tools and equipment. Participates as a member of the exhibits team to design, fabricate, install, and maintain museum exhibits. Prop finishing, mural painting, and occasional artifact paint restoration.

    Nuit Blanche Saskatoon, 2020 - 2024, Curator
    Developing the artistic vision for Nuit Blanche Saskatoon's programming from 2020 to 2024. Five main festivals and NB Eve in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan.Reviewing and selecting submitted projects with a community jury. Providing project development support to artists, assisting with grant reports, and working with the board, artists, and press. Assisting with social media, logistical planning, signage, pamphlet design, fund development and communications.

    Parkridge Centre, 2019 - 2022 Artist in Residence
    Piloting an artist-in-residence project using art as a tool to build community, connection, and confidence with residents of Parkridge Centre. Developing new programming, planning, and instructing art-based workshops to accommodate a wide range of needs, ensuring everyone's participation. Managing studio and supplies, along with cleaning, organization, and preparation work. Creating graphic designs, documenting via video, and painting large-scale murals.

    Concordia University, 2018 - 2019 Student Ceramic Technician
    Maintaining the studio and supplies, mixing glazes, making clay, repairing kilns, cleaning, sorting, and organizing. Graphic design work to promote events and fundraising. Preparing for and documenting events and programming; helping students; loading and unloading kilns; setting up for workshops; and assisting visiting artists.

    PAVED ARTS, Artist-Run Centre, 2017 - 2018 Gallery Assistant
    Graphic design, website design, digitizing & organizing archives, and social media. Creating and managing a video-based camp for youth. Organizing a call for submissions, moderating a jury. Creating publications, corresponding with artists, gallery installation, creating promotional videos, gallery tours, and communicating with the press.


    SCYAP(Saskatoon Community Youth Arts Program), 2010 - 2017, 2021
    Artistic Leader/Teacher     working with people ages 5-65+ of all backgrounds (including the mental health institute, rehabilitation centres and schools), specializing in at-risk youth, developing lesson plans & workshops, Leading & facilitating talking circles, running a public art drop-in, and public speaking.
